Koa Survived Neglect. Now He Needs You to Survive What Comes Next.
Koa came to us from a heartbreaking situation in a nearby county. He and his siblings were rescued from a small, filthy enclosure where they were forced to live in their own feces. Their tiny feet were covered in open sores, their coats matted with filth, and their bodies marked by neglect.
Among the litter, Koa stood out—not for strength, but for his fragility. He was noticeably smaller than his siblings, his body quietly struggling with something deeper.
After thorough veterinary testing, Koa was diagnosed with a serious congenital condition: an intrahepatic portosystemic shunt—specifically, an intrahepatic, right divisional, portocaval shunt. This condition prevents his liver from properly filtering toxins, putting his health and future at risk.
His best chance at survival is a specialized surgery called Percutaneous Transvenous Coil Embolization (PTCE). This minimally invasive procedure places a stent and coil to gradually close the abnormal vessel. It offers Koa the highest chance at a full, healthy life—but it can’t be performed until he is about a year old. Doing it earlier risks the stent becoming ineffective as he grows.
Until then, Koa is being treated with daily medications, a strict low-protein diet, and regular veterinary monitoring to stabilize his condition.
Despite all he’s been through, Koa radiates joy. Just today, he was lying on his back, tossing a toy in the air, squeaking it every time it landed in his paws. In those moments, he’s just like any other happy, playful puppy.
But love alone can’t pay for his surgery. Without donor support, we simply cannot afford the lifesaving treatment Koa needs.
